Your Coda is a planner, with very short entries called tickets. Contents of a ticket are called "lessons" but can be anything.

It helps you keep track of all the things you want to do with, or for the kids in your life.

Once they’re grown, what was once a planner for you becomes an heirloom for them: A treasure of family wisdom, practical help, fun ideas and lifelong guidance.

Your grown kids (or grandkids, etc.) can use their Coda to refer to and add to when they have kids of their own, then pass it down again.

The goal of Coda is to help you strengthen family ties for both current and future generations by carving out the lessons and priorities that are important to you.

• Register online or with the app.
• Enter your kids by first name and month/year of birth. Any child you enter will be listed in your "Primary Family."
• When someone asks you to contribute to their child’s Coda, that child’s name will appear in your "Extended Family" list.
• Open a ticket for any idea you have about something you want to do with, or for, the child.
• Tickets are usually about the size of a text message.
• Assign each ticket to the child (or children) it applies to. The default setting is that each ticket will apply to all of your primary family and none of your extended family, but you can check and uncheck names as you like.
• File the ticket by age you want to address the lesson and assign it to the category or categories it pertains to.
• Coda will remind you to address the lesson when the child reaches the designated age. Your dashboard lets you see where you’re focusing your priorities.
• Every family, and each child within it, is unique. Coda accounts for this by making the ticket template easy to personalize for each idea you have: With a click of a button, you can send a ticket into the Coda of one or all of the kids on your list.

Coda is for anyone who wants to take an active role in the formation of a child’s character.

Typically, it’s a parent who starts a Coda for their child and then invites extended family members to contribute tickets, but anyone can start a Coda for any child.

As you’re building it, the Coda is yours. Use it as a planner to keep you on track to accomplish the things that are most important to you as a parent, grandparent or extended family member.

When the child is grown, the Coda becomes theirs. Give them a hard copy or an eBook, they can refer to it throughout their life, build on it when they start their own family, then pass it down to their kids.

We look for help and advice on topics we may not feel confident about, but that we want our children to benefit from. That’s where the Coda Catalog comes in. Search for ideas for different age children or by category.

Sharing ideas is fun and useful. It’s a real boost when someone re-tickets your idea to their own Coda. You’ll be notified when that happens. (All tickets are posted anonymously to the catalog unless marked as “private.”)

Think of something you’re glad your parents taught you. Or something you wished they had. Most ideas can be logged in just a sentence or two.

Your Coda keeps track of all of those ideas for you. Plus, it reminds you to address the idea when the child reaches the age you designated.

Coda is about raising kids with intention, according to your own values and priorities. It is passing down what matters most to you. Coda helps busy adults to carve out their intentions, making more room for love and connection.

The point is to make us better parents, not to raise “better kids.” …The kids are already pretty awesome.

Check out travel for teens summer programs. Let them choose from themes such as service, adventure, animal rescue, etc.

Use commas or dashes if you want to address the lesson at different times in the child’s life.

Once you address the lesson, either close the ticket or “re-ticket” it to another year if you want to bring it up again.
For any lesson that pertains to adulthood in general, assign the ticket to age 21.

If you would like to start keeping track of your plans for the kids you hope to have one day, enter a new child as “my future kid,” or make up any name you like. Leave the birth month and year blank.

When the child is born, add their name and birthday and click “import previous tickets.”

Coda lets you keep the memory of loved ones alive for future generations.

You are considered the author of each ticket you enter, but you can change that designation and attribute the ticket to anyone you like, including a relative who is no longer living, a historical figure or pop culture icon.

Simply delete your name next to “author” and write in the name of who you’re attributing the lesson to.
